Sunshine and Gardening

We awoke at 8am to the sun streaming through the little front window boded well for another hot day. It is so good to finally see some sunshine and have some warmth.

After brekky we had long list of things to do as normal.

Main things we wanted to achieve was to get some strimming done around the outbuilding and main barn and we wanted to attack the overgrown veggie patch.

We tried to get the strimming done before it was too hot and then we could attack the veggie plot. The red currant and herbs seem to be doing really well not so sure about the garlic we planted we will see. The Aquiliga (spelling?) looked great around the edges with lots of different colours.

We had a major sort of things to go in bags for Spain and then things for our trip to Italy and things to stay. We think we now know where everything is well most of it anyway!

Stuart had given us a set of shelves and some rails( amongst lots of other things) which we constructed and then put up in the outbuilding which gives us more space. Very important living in such a small space that we make use of ever bit of it!

We also put some pictures up, a mirror and Scotty’s fab idea of a photo gallery frame which she gave us. Which is perfect hanging up on the back wall with lots of piccys of family and friends for all to see. Makes the place feel more like home too. Thanks Scotty.

Great to have a hot shower outdoors all with the solar shower bag before dinner a good old Shepherds Pie after an anchovy salad to start with all outside with a few round of cards. Perfect.

More Strimming and Cleared Veggie Plot

Happy Birthday Laney we were thinking of you and raised a glass to you in the evening too.

Sun shining again making the choice of what to do a great deal easier.

We wanted to finish digging out the veg patch and strimming the back terrace in the morning so we could plant some lettuces and beans in the evening when it was cooler.

We swapped around between us one strimming and the other digging and weeding and by midday we had the veggie plot ready for planting, the back terrace strimmed as well as some paths to the back strimmed making access easier. Chimney pots (called slate tiles) replaced on the chimneys at the back of the barn which had come off with all the snow during the winter.

We then had a couple of hours fettling the bikes and the van ready for our trip. Now full of climbing gear, camping gear, bikes and anything else you can imagine.

A late lunch and then we planted the lettuces, beans, sun flowers and sweet peas and watered them in.

Had a bit of a plan re getting materials on site and logisitics for getting the main floor down when we get back. A huge job and we are just hoping that Le Forgue will deliver to the bridge otherwise, we are going to need to re assess again.

Another hot shower and we headed down to Salau for more water to confirm dates for Dad at the auberge and to try and touch base with Clive but to no avail. We had forgotten their landline numbers and no reception with the mobiles.

Back for another anchovy salad starter and then sausages with pesto potatoes and beans in between a battle of cards. Great to sit outside till 10pm as it is warm enough and light enough too.

Feel like we have made quite a lot or progress in a couple of days even if doing just lots of pottering jobs.

Arrival in the Sun

After our overnight stop just outside Limoux we headed towards the barn in glorious sunshine. We had a quick stop in St Girons for some food before heading on the final stretch to Salau. The village was quiet, the new owners into the Auberge busy gardening ready for the summer season.

Always good to get back and see that the place is still standing except for the toilet vent pipe with fan which seems to have keeled over again but this time it seems to have snapped the flu pipe so a bit more fettling there to be done in due course.

Whey hey nobody has broken in but even more re assuring is how secure the outbuilding was, so much so that we had to break in ourselves!!!

Somehow which we still cannot work out the latch for the top of the stable door had slid down so we could not actually get into the outbuilding!!! Not a chance to break the main door so in the end we dismantled the window and Al squeezed in. It was tight!!!

The outbuilding seems to have survived the winter well and was clean, dry and free of animals which was great.

We spent the rest of the day unpacking Vinnie who I am sure was relieved to get rid of the weight!!! Bit by bit we brought things up from wood that Al had rescued from the skip in Chamonix, to cupboards from Cham Share, to boxes of food left over from the winter, to wires, bikes, climbing kit etc etc etc.

The cupboard that we got off Cham Share for the outbuilding is a perfect fit and already makes a huge difference. A place to put pots and pans etc rather than on the floor as before.

With only planning to be around for a few days we were trying to get things unpacked without having to re pack too much on Monday when we head to Spain.

The place has not lost any of its beauty and the river is roaring with all the snow melt and hot sunshine in the valley, cascades looking impressive  and the peaks were as clear as anything, a great day to arrive and unpack as doing that in the rain would have been miserable.

We needed to get water from the fountain in Salau and we also wanted to say hello to Anuk and Renne who have taken over the auberge. So we filled up with water and stopped in to have a drink and say hello. They seem like a really fun couple, keen bikers and lots of ideas for the auberge. So I booked Dad in for a couple of nights for his stay in July and we will plan to eat there one night and have Dad up for dinner at the barn for the other night.

We trundled back up the track and had dinner with a glass of wine. It was actually quite chilly so we lit the stove and the place was toasty warm. We did not manage to squeeze in a mattress this time so were back to the lilos for sleeping on and will pick up a mattress on the way back from Spain.

To bed with the sound of the river and nothing else.

Snowy Salau

Breezy and I are still in Chamonix running Ski Breezy – Chamonix accommodation in a catered chalet. Just had n email from Alison & Peter in Salau who took a photo of the bergerie in the snow and sent it over. It all looks fabulous in its winter coat.

Bergerie in its winter coat

The skip diving is still continuing even in Chamonix. So far have managed to glean a matress or two, some chairs, a couple of mirrors, windows and a load of wood. Planning what we want to get done this year when we get back down south. Can't wait!

Thoughts for 2010

Breezy and I are currently running Ski Breezy, Chamonix accommodation in a catered chalet. Part of our time is spent thinking and planning the next steps for the Pyrenees. We want to get the ground floor in the main barn concreted and some progress on doing the joints in the inside walls.

As ever the hardest thing is going to be getting the materials on site. The floor is going to take about 10 ton of balast which is going to have to be hand balled up to the barn from the piste. Then there is gonna be a lot of bags of cement too. And we are gonna need water to mix it all. Can we get a mixer through the door and mix inside? Should we put the floor down on the first floor first to give us space inside to store stuff? But that is gonna make the ground floor dark for working inside.

Dilemas, where to start? Keep thinking round in circles and then find something easy to do instead, like lay the table in the chalet.

In the meantime we are hoarding useful stuff in Chamonix to take down to the Pyrenees in May. We also have a stash of stuff in Derbyshire which we need to get down there too if anyone out there is driving out to Chamonix or the Pyrenees.

Departure

The time has come again to move up north away from our little Pyrenees Paradise.

We obviously did not want to leave and slept through the alarm so left an hour later than planned. The stars were still out and thank good ness we put the cardboard on the windscreen the night before too cold on the handies to defrost the car first thing.

Sitting in Vinnie tapping away a couple of hours from Chamonix where we are staying with Sauze and Patrick tonight before hitting the UK tomorrow.

A bientot.

Packing up

Blue skies and colder than cold!!! Heavy frost on the ground again, Vinnie almost looking white.

We had a visitor this morning a young Spanish cartographer who had old piccys of the barn and needed to get the new GPS co ordinates. Sadly he was not in the position to give us the aerial picky which would have been quite nice.

A day of tidying up, lots of bits and pieces. Solar storage up to 90% so happy with that should be OK for our return.

Satelite dishes down, solar panels in, general pack up and  tidy a lot easier with the sun shining.

Hot shower in the sun which was FAB…clean bunnies again!!!!

We popped down to Salau to drop off rubbish, recycling, and keys for Alison and Peter before back up to the barn for a final meal and early night as we have a long drive and early start tomorrow back to Cham.

Another mushroom education

Woke up to another chilly morning but blue skies again so quite happy.

I spent a while doing work stuff while Al tinkered with the generator which is still misbehaving.

As soon as the sun was out Al was back on the roof with buckets of water and fingers crossed  we think the leak has stopped, time will tell.

We had a bit of a planning session for the bathroom for next time we are back and we are hopeful we should have a functional indoor shower next time we get back without too much hassle.

Lee popped in after lunch for a bit of mushrooming and we found another couple of bolettes plus Lee showed us the Grisettes which we seem to have lots of, which are edible and the Blushers. As always plenty of the inedible varieties around which we left well alone.

As soon as the sun had gone down we were inside warming up. A good beef casserole and dumplings for supps the odd glass of wine and a game of scrabble for a change.

Cirque de Cagateille

Needed to set the alarm to make sure we did not sleep in as we had a walk planned for the day which we estimated at about 6 hours.

Woke up to blue skies which was great and made packed lunches and had brekky before getting away by  8.45am, not bad for us!!!

It was about a 40 minute drive to the start of the walk through another valley which was beautiful, slightly more affluent than the Salat valley maybe due to Guzet the ski area and the GR10 influence.

We then headed off up to the Cirque de Cagateille, Etang Hilette and Etang Alet as a circular walk.

It was an easy walk up to the cirque which was not as impressive as Cirque D’Anglade well we thought anyway.

The autumn colours were however really beautiful. It was then a steep climb up to the Etang Hilette which has a little unmanned refuge on the lakeside.

It took us 1.5 hours to get to the lake, so we stopped for a rest and to take in the views before heading on to Etang Alet. Quite different terrain, boulder hopping most of the hour to get to it where we had a good packed lunch over looking the lake. Sunny but a chilly wind. We got really good views from here and could piece together bits and pieces of valleys and peaks etc.

Gloves back on and we headed down for a couple of the hours back to Vinnie. Through lots of very pretty woodland, but no edible mushies to be found.

We kept seeeing these markings on the way Lee any idea what they are for?

We stopped in at the café on the way back to see Daniella and Freddy and say good bye to them. The auberge is on the market so not sure if they will be about again when we get back. Hopefully, they will get a buyer soon but it is a bit of a waiting game.

Back to the barn, quick showers, wood burner on, unpacked kit, internet stuff to sort. Generator still being temperamental which is a pain but it is still under guarantee so if it is not sorted by Friday it will be going back with us to Cham to get fixed.

We had a good chicken curry for supper and a few hands of Bezique before hitting the sack both pleasantly tired after our walk in the sun and the wind.

Another very starry night, totally unpolluted skies and we could see millions of stars, not for long though far too chilly outside….to bed!!!!
